The architectural firm SOM designed the Burj
Khalifa in Dubai, the China World Trade Center Tower in Beijing, and the
Freedom Tower in New York
The American architectural firm Skidmore,
Owings & Merrill, which is developing the design for the Iconic Towers
skyscraper in Alatau city, told Forbes Kazakhstan what stage the project is at
and whether its concept might change.
SOM reported that the concept design for the
Alatau Iconic Complex has already been completed. Following this, the
architects plan to begin detailed design work on the Alatau Tower.
Concurrently, SOM continues to work on the Gate District in collaboration with
an international team of consultants.
“The Government of Kazakhstan has approved the
concept design. Thus, the main architectural concept will remain unchanged.
However, as with any large-scale project of this caliber, the phases of
detailed design and engineering are now beginning. Some minor adjustments are
possible,” stated representatives of SOM.
The firm added that it will continue to
participate in the project even after the design phase is completed.
“SOM will continue to work closely with our
client in various capacities on both the Iconic Complex and the master plan as
a whole. We are very proud to be part of this project,” the architects said.
The skyscraper will be part of the Gate
District business area—one of four districts in the Alatau smart city.
Previously, authorities announced the construction of the Iconic Building-1
International Business Development Center in the Gate District. Other names for
the project include Iconic Towers and Iconic Complex. According to previously
announced figures, investment in the project exceeds $800 million. Notably, no
funding for the construction from the state budget is planned.
