Construction has begun on two pyramid-shaped skyscrapers in Kazakhstan that look more like scenes from a science-fiction film than a conventional architectural project. But these are not computer-generated images filed away under “someday.” Preparatory works are already underway, with full-scale excavation of the foundation pit scheduled to begin in May.
The Alatau Iconic Complex and Gateway District will form the architectural heart of the entirely new Alatau City, currently being developed in Kazakhstan between the cities of Almaty and Qonaev.
The Design of Kazakhstan’s New Skyscrapers
The towers’ stepped pyramidal form is more than an aesthetic choice. Architects at SOM drew inspiration from the surrounding landscape, particularly the Trans-Ili Alatau mountain range, part of the Tien Shan system that stretches for approximately 350 kilometres along the Kazakhstan–Kyrgyzstan border.
The valleys, glaciers and layered terrain of the mountain range are reflected directly in the architecture. The concept is aptly named “Mountain Landscape.”
The stepped silhouette of the towers creates space for balconies and terraces at different levels, while central atriums allow natural light to penetrate deep into the buildings and provide panoramic views of the surrounding mountains.
The façades will feature integrated solar-shading systems designed to reduce solar heat gain — an important consideration given the region’s continental climate.
This is more than a new residential district. Kazakhstan’s authorities position Alatau City as an “area of accelerated development” based on the charter-city model.
The city’s master plan, developed by Singapore-based Surbana Jurong, extends through 2050. By then, Alatau City is planned to become home to approximately 2 million residents.
Construction of the towers has been entrusted to China State Construction Engineering Corporation (CSCEC), one of the world’s largest construction contractors. The company has worked on major projects including Beijing Daxing International Airport and the Water Cube National Aquatics Center.
Gateway District — A New Urban Hub
The Gateway District, at the heart of which the towers will stand, is being designed as a walkable, high-density and transit-oriented district.
Plans include high-speed rail, metro lines, green boulevards, and even infrastructure for electric air taxis.
Together, these elements are intended to make Gateway District a new business and civic hub for Alatau City, integrating advanced mobility solutions with a dense, mixed-use urban environment.
