Alatau City to be granted special status

The Head of State has instructed the preparation of a draft decree, within ten days, granting Alatau City a special status with direct subordination to the Government. The announcement was made during his latest State of the Nation Address, reports Tengrinews.kz.

President Tokayev highlighted that, during his recent visit to China, multibillion-dollar agreements were signed with leading international companies. Notably, one of these companies, which had been involved in the development of the global technopolis Shenzhen, will play a direct role in implementing the Alatau City project.

“The next step should be to establish a solid institutional foundation for Alatau City. A draft decree, granting the city special status with direct subordination to the Government must be prepared within ten days,” the Head of State emphasized.

According to President Tokayev,a separate law is expected to be adopted within six months, defining the city’s governance framework, financial models, and other key aspects.

“A special legal status is not a privilege, but a necessary measure and instrument, without it, all plans risk remaining only on paper. Alatau City must become the first fully digital city in the region: from the adoption of Smart City technologies to enabling payments for goods and services in cryptocurrencies. The new city will embody the vision of Kazakhstan’s future, uniting technological progress with a highly comfortable living environment,” - he underlined.

Alatau City was established in Kazakhstan in 2024 by a decree signed by President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev. The Government subsequently approved the Master Plan of the new city, accompanied by adjustments to the borders of Ili and Talgar districts as well as the city of Qonaev.
