On October 26, the Iconic Complex project, representing an investment of more than USD 800 million, was officially launched in Alatau City, Tengrinews.kz reports.
The launch ceremony of the landmark development, which is expected to become an architectural symbol of Kazakhstan's new city, brought together distinguished guests from around the world.
Among the international attendees was Gao Bo, Chairman of CSCEC International, who travelled from China to attend the ceremony. His company serves as the project's general contractor.
Kanat Bozumbayev and Gabriele Pascolini
Renowned architect Gabriele Pascolini also attended the event, travelling from Europe. He represents Skidmore, Owings & Merrill (SOM), the internationally acclaimed architectural firm known for iconic projects such as the Burj Khalifa in Dubai, One World Trade Center (Freedom Tower) in New York, and Willis Tower in Chicago.
The Iconic Complex project marks another addition to SOM's portfolio in Kazakhstan, following the firm's previous involvement in developing the architectural concept for Talan Towers in Astana.
The Government of Kazakhstan was represented by Deputy Prime Minister Kanat Bozumbayev. Together with National Bank Governor Timur Suleimenov and other distinguished guests, he toured the future construction site, received a briefing from the project contractors, and delivered remarks during the official ceremony.
The Deputy Prime Minister described the occasion as a significant milestone in the project's development.
"The Iconic Complex project is entering its implementation phase and will contribute to shaping the new identity of the city. The development is expected to become one of Alatau's landmark destinations and an example of the modern urban environment we are creating," Kanat Bozumbayev stated.
The Deputy Prime Minister emphasized the importance of maintaining the highest standards of construction quality and seismic safety throughout the project's implementation.
He also highlighted that an international project of this scale would contribute to strengthening the capabilities and expertise of Kazakhstani companies and professionals.
Representatives of the construction company, in turn, described Iconic Complex as a strategic priority of national significance.
"We will ensure that the project is delivered to the highest standards, mobilizing our best teams and resources. Together with all project stakeholders, we are committed to creating a new architectural landmark of national significance," said Gao Bo, Chairman of CSCEC International.
The project is scheduled for completion by the end of 2029.
"This Project would never have been launched without..."
Yuriy Tskhay, a member of the Alatau City Development Council, Chairman of Caspian Group, and a prominent public figure, then addressed the audience.
He emphasized that Iconic Complex represents just one stage in the broader development of a new technology-driven city in Kazakhstan. He also underscored the decisive role of the country's leadership in making such ambitious initiatives possible.
Yuriy Tskhay
"This project would never have been launched without the strong political will of President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, his active support, and the high level of engagement demonstrated by government authorities. Under different circumstances, or in another country, such progress would have been difficult even to imagine.
"In just four years, Alatau City has established its own Special Economic Zone, obtained official city status, defined its administrative boundaries, introduced a special regulatory framework, and successfully presented itself on the international stage," Yuriy Tskhay stated.
Timur Suleimenov
Timur Suleimenov, Governor of the National Bank of Kazakhstan, also addressed the ceremony, highlighting the project's strategic importance.
The National Bank is participating in the implementation of Iconic Complex through the National Investment Corporation.
"Our participation in this project reflects the role of Kazakhstan's institutional investors in supporting initiatives of national significance and bringing together domestic and international partners to implement long-term projects," Timur Suleimenov stated.
What will Iconic Complex look like?
According to the project's architectural vision, Iconic Complex will be a multifunctional development integrating office spaces, residential apartments, a hotel, a shopping centre, and public spaces.
The architectural concept of Iconic Complex draws inspiration from the Trans-Ili Alatau mountain range.
The distinctive mountain landscape, rugged rock formations, and intricate patterns of glacial ice are reflected in the buildings' forms and façade designs, creating a contemporary architectural identity rooted in the region's natural heritage.
The official ceremony in Alatau concluded with the unveiling of a commemorative stone at the Iconic Complex construction site.
The symbolic event marked the beginning of a landmark development that is expected to become the defining feature of Kazakhstan's new city skyline.
